Both the film and the play The Crucible deal with the starting point of the witch trials in Salem. Besides, what Miller actually tried to do was a representation of the events of the 1950s in America with suspected Communists. Here, we will see how the process of what would subsequently be known by many authors as mass hysteria started. Arthur Miller introduced a love story between two of the main figures of the story in order to make it more attractive for the audience and readers. The play and the film are not completely faithful to the episodes occurred in Salem during the winter of 1692, but they are a summary of all the events that took place in that year. To do so, this study compares the real history of the witchcraft trials in Salem, and their representations made in the play The Crucible written by Arthur Miller and his film adaptation released in 1996.
